It all came to me while I lay on the floor of my fitness room exhausted at the thought of heeding my personal trainer’s instruction to “do another set”. I had just painstakingly completed two sets of 15 pull-ups, and I was on a 1 minute break. My trainer was talking to me about what drives him: “working harder than everyone around me”. He is a former Canadian champion athlete in track and field.

1. A dash of relationship and a pinch of task oriented behaviours, to taste
One must decide the right time and place for behaviours that develop others’ skills and talents vs. behaviours that simply get the job done. Much depends on the organizational system, culture and climate. The team members' ability to sense the best approach for a given situation is what’s needed. I often come across people who feel they aren’t moving ahead and they don’t have the support they need to get what they want. Whether it be their next promotion, their next employer, starting a family or anything else, it feels overwhelmingly like the universe is working against them, and everybody is out to keep them stuck in their rut.
Today I had lunch with an associate of mine and we touched on the topic of Scarcity vs. Abundance. It brought to mind an important lesson in management. Management roles demand that we choose where we focus our time and energy. What we focus on is what we attract. Focusing on the right things will attract more of the right things. Focusing on the wrong things… well, you get the idea.
